    Plaquenil getting immune

Plaquenil is used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia.

Is hydroxychloroquine a quinine Does hydroxychloroquine lower immune system

Yes, Poppie, I take plaquenil and have for for several years. They call it a DMARD medication, so it isn't a biologic and isn't supposed to suppress your immune system. That's probably why your doc wants to add it. It is a very slow medication though. I have been diagnosed for 12 years and I was a complete mess at first. Initially, I was only on Prednisone, then Plaquenil as well. Plaquenil worked wonders for me. I have now been off the Prednisone for 2 years and only on 300mg of Plaquenil daily. My doctor says there are lots of studies proving Plaquenil is very beneficial to those with lupus. Plaquenil itself probably does not have a direct affect on your immune system - it is a DMARD and is not considered to be an immunosuppressant. However, many with active autoimmune diseases feel that they are not succeptible to many of the common viruses that they are exposed to - somewhat of a silver lining.

Plaquenil is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. This medicine is not effective against all strains of malaria.

Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is a medication most known for its original purpose of treating or preventing malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. But you can’t even compare it to the only other things I have to treat lupus—prednisone, where 100 percent of people get side effects, or immunosuppressive drugs, which suppress the immune system, potentially causing infections, low blood counts, and liver toxicity. Plaquenil is the brand name for the prescription drug hydroxychloroquine. It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Lyme Arthritis In more recent years, with greater experience using more potent DMARD agents, we have developed an enhanced treatment strategy, now more commonly choosing low-dose methotrexate MTX, typically 15-20 mg/week, over hydroxychloroquine as the initial DMARD, and reserving hydroxychloroquine, typically 400mg daily, for cases with milder synovitis.
