  6. I've been taking plaquenil since I was diagnosed. It really released the joint pain from Lupus within a month. I don't think ice ever had any side effects. Although I do get my eyes tested every year - the doctor is watching for retinal damage which is a potential side effect. My eyes have never shown any damage from the plaquenil.

I did do some research to decide if I should take plaquenil or not and found it to be in a group of antimalaria drugs and considered separate from the flouroquinolones. But, I'm going to double check now. I just checked on the web again and plaquenil is a chloroquine, not a quinolone. Rarely it can cause damage to vision by destroying the retina. Many people get nausea and some other side effects from plaquenil. For autoimmune diseases, plaquenil takes between 3 months and 1 year of consistent daily use to work. Plaquenil is fairly expensive for many people. In my case I cannot take the generic due to allergy to a non-active component in the med. So I pay $50 a month with insurance. I get Plaquenil from international pharm & it's much cheaper. It works better than biologics that contributed to/sped up process leading to my cancer. I'm now "cancer-free" & refuse to go back on them. I might have to get vision checked & deal w/other mild side effects, but pain/swelling is gone on Plaquenil.
