(WRIC) -- 8News has warned viewers before about commonly prescribed antibiotics leaving patients in permanent pain. But now a Virginia woman says one of the drugs killed her mother. Cipro or it's generic Ciprofloxacin is strong enough to kill Anthrax. Yet doctors have been prescribing it for everything from sinus infections to bladder infections and bronchitis. Valerie Barnett says the complications can be deadly."This was a healthy woman who was vibrant and completely took care of herself and took this pill that she didn't even need," says Barnett who still grieves the loss of her mother Magdalene Fuchs. Fuchs was shot during World War II, she survived a bullet and an escape from Hungary, but what she couldn't survive was Cipro and it's generic. It says so, right on her death certificate."Drug-induced cholestatic hepatitisfrom Ciprofloxacin," states Barnett reading from the death certificate. She was sent to a specialist at Johns Hopkins Hospital as doctors searched for a cause. The agency also cautioned that these bacteria-fighting drugs -- including levofloxacin (Levaquin) and ciprofloxacin (Cipro) -- shouldn't be prescribed for sinusitis, chronic bronchitis or simple urinary tract infections unless no other treatments options exist."Fluoroquinolones have risks and benefits that should be considered very carefully," Dr. He's director of the Office of Antimicrobial Products at the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research."It's important that both health care providers and patients are aware of both the risks and benefits of fluoroquinolones and make an informed decision about their use," Cox said. Food and Drug Administration announced Tuesday that it's strengthening label warnings on a class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones because the drugs can lead to disabling side effects, including long-term nerve damage and ruptured tendons. A safety review revealed that potentially permanent side effects involving tendons, muscles, joints, nerves and the central nervous system can occur hours or weeks after exposure to fluoroquinolone pills or injections. Also, two or more serious side effects can occur together, the FDA said. Because of this, the FDA recommends reserving these antibiotics for serious bacterial infections, such as anthrax, plague and bacterial pneumonia. In these cases, "the benefits of fluoroquinolones outweigh the risks and it is appropriate for them to remain available as a therapeutic option," the agency said. Besides Cipro and Levaquin, other fluoroquinolones include moxifloxacin (Avelox), ofloxacin (Floxin) and gemifloxacin (Factive). A UTI, or urinary tract infection, happens when bacteria infect the urinary tract which includes organs like your kidneys, ureters, bladder, and the urethra. UTIs are extremely common for women, who have 1 in 2 chances of experiencing a urinary tract infection in their lifetime. Common UTI symptoms include the frequent or urge to pee, cloudy or bloody urine, and discomfort or even pain when trying to urinate. To treat a UTI, your doctor can prescribe medicine for you by using a lab culture to find out what kind of strain is causing your infection. Most UTIs are caused by bacteria like E.coli, which are responsible for around 90% of UTI causes. For uncomplicated UTIs, antibiotics usually cure an infection within a few days; some (common antibiotics for UTI) include Ampicillin, Keflex, Monurol, Bactrium, and Septra. More serious infections involving the upper tract organs (like your kidneys) may require different medicine or different treatments. Although medicine like antibiotics can clear your infection, your body can eventually develop resistance to antibiotics, making the medicine ineffective.
