    How to taper off plaquenil

Since I have not taken it my chest feels so much better which is odd because chest pain is not listed as a side effect. Also I noticed that the Plaquenil I think was making me feel different but not in a good way.

Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of drugs called antimalarials. It is used to prevent and treat acute attacks of malaria. It is also used to treat discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis in patients whose symptoms have not improved with other treatments. I have been taking Plaquenil 400 mg per day for about 2 years now due to lupus flare. When i first started it, I was also started on prednisone to get my inflammation under control. Actually I started on 200 mg per day and about 2 months before tapering off pred, he upped me to 400 mg per day of plaquenil to give it plenty of time to kick in. Hello all, I am currently new to this site and ran across the discussion about stopping Plaquenil. I have been taking Plaquenil for about 8-9 months and thought that it was not helping me because I still have a fair amount of joint pain, fatigue, muscle pain and so many other issues.

Did you take yourself off Plaquenil, or did your doctor tell you to go off it? Plus I will be honest the whole eye site thing even though rare has always freaked me out. I went off of it to see if I can manage not being on it as my lupus isnt as severe as other cases but already I am feeling very fatigued and my legs feel heavy if that makes sense. I can discuss alternatives with my DR at my next appt but my DR feels as though the plaq is the best bet for my level of illness. If so are you just dealing with Lupus symptoms or did you take another med? I'm on Plaquenil, and after the first week's GI upset, I have had no problems with it.

  4. You really should talk to your doctor about your tapering schedule and any side effects you’re experiencing. They may want you to slow down. Plaquenil can take up 1-2 months to start working and up to six months for full effect. More information for Plaquenil can be found here. Have you been prescribed steroid treatment for your RA?

Happily, going off plaquenil quelled the worst of my psoriasis, so the overall trade-off was eventually worth it for me. It wasn't very clear from your post whether it was the primary care doctor or the rheumatologist who wants him to decrease the plaquenil. With the Plaquenil I don't think you will find much relief in such a short time on it & at half of a workable dose. I have read about people stopping P & flaring up. Those who stopped it abruptly had real problems similar to what you are experiencing. If you really need to get off it, I would taper down slowly, very slowly. Plaquenil damps down the reactiveness of the receptors that send out your “fighters”, which in us is overactive. Rather than strangling the life out of your immune system like steroid meds do, it attenuates the function to closer to normal. Over time it can slightly lower your white cell count.
