May 28, 2016 I have been diagnosed with Limited Scleroderma. My choices are Methotrexate, Plaquenil or Sulfasalzine Azulfidine. I researched them and determined Plaquenil would be my last choice, although it was his first, because I already have lattice degeneration of the retina in both eyes and one of the potential side effects is retinal problems. These medications may also prevent lupus from spreading to certain organs, such as the kidney and central nervous system your brain and spinal cord and may help to reduce flares by as much as 50%. Plaquenil and other anti-malarials are the key to controlling lupus long term, and some lupus patients may be on Plaquenil for the rest of their lives. Do you think I should try the Plaquenil first before starting MTX or is it fine to jump to MTX? From what I read so far, seems like methotrexate is a bigger drug with more side effects so plaquenil would be the better choice. Any information would be helpful. Answer. Both drugs are well tolerated and useful in patients with lupus associated.
