Options for treatment of tinnitus include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs); however in rare instances this symptom may occur as a side effect of this class of medications. A 50-year-old woman developed bilateral tinnitus after several weeks of being treated with sertraline 50 mg. Cochlear input is processed through complex interactions between serotonergic, glutamatergic, and GABAergic neurotransmitter systems. This is an open access article distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. Serotonin is involved in filtering of auditory stimuli. She had been on a long-standing daily dose of aspirin 325 mg which had been discontinued shortly before starting sertraline. Shortly after discontinuation of the medication, her tinnitus subsided completely. Tinnitus is a rare side effect of sertraline and may be related to particular distribution of serotonin receptor subtypes within the auditory system, and serotonergic agents may reinforce or desensitize the activity of different receptors. Also, there may be a priming effect of salicylate agents on the auditory system, predisposing particular patients to be more sensitive to how auditory stimuli are processed. Serotonin has a role in the filtering of auditory input [1], allowing for appropriate disregarding of trivial sensory input [2], and the development of tinnitus may reflect a disturbance in this function [2]. Serotonergic receptors have been described in the cochlea, originating mainly from the dorsal region of the superior olivary complex [3], and this neurotransmitter seems to have a close correlation with GABAergic and glutamatergic input into the cochlea. Your baby's birth was supposed to be one of the happiest moments of your life. Instead, your doctor informed you that your child was born with the serious birth defect of a hole in his heart. If you were prescribed Zoloft during your pregnancy (or before you even knew you were pregnant), Zoloft may be responsible for your baby's birth defect. As of October 2016, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not recalled Zoloft. However, the agency has released a series of warnings about its link to serious birth defects -- including feeding issues and abdominal organs poking through a newborn's belly button -- and serious side effects. Unfortunately, those warnings came too late for many moms who took the drug. Read about the first steps to possibly being reimbursed for your child's injuries through a Zoloft lawsuit and the kinds of damages (monetary compensation) you might be awarded. Zoloft is a prescription drug used to treat severe depression and a variety of other conditions, including anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

Found Zoloft and cognitive behavioral therapy to be highly effective in the treatment of reasonably severe anxiety disorders in children and adolescents. I reported on the findings when they first appeared, hailing them as mostly good news, and promised to come back with further postings about the limitations of the research. Today: thoughts about the medication arm of the trial. The is selective when it comes to research studies in psychiatry. I suspect that the editors chose this paper because it looked at a large sample (489 subjects) and because the results were striking. The children had social anxiety, generalized anxiety, and separation anxiety. On medication, most kids responded, and the responses were substantial.

Association of SSRIs with hair loss is rare and limited to a few case reports. In this case study, two patients developed diffuse hair loss during sertraline treatment. A was a 47-year-old married man with a diagnosis of panic disorder according to the DSM-V criteria and specific phobia (claustrophobia). Approximately 8 weeks after starting sertraline intake, he noticed hair loss. Decreasing the dose of his medication led to the resolution of hair loss within 6 weeks. M was a woman with major depressive disorder who complained of hair loss during treatment with sertraline within only 2 months of treatment (at the beginning of treatment) while she was receiving a low dose of sertraline (unlike the other case). Conclusions: SSRIs-induced hair loss is an infrequently observed adverse effect that may be overlooked. You might ask, “What if these drugs are in fact working some of the time for some people? ” They still wouldn’t be worth the consequences for the placebo effect, particularly given their side effects, which are notoriously hidden from the lay public. I find it outrageous that drug companies can use any number of tactics to establish efficacy, including the suppression of data, and then use those tactics to legitimize long-term prescribing with no thought or attention to the real side effects over time. When I lecture on the futility and perils of antidepressants, I like to employ the following analogy courtesy of Dr. David Healy, an internationally respected psychiatrist based in the UK: Let’s say you’re somebody who experiences a lot of social anxiety. You have a couple glasses of wine at a party as a pre-emptive strike. A sense of calmness washes over you and your symptoms evaporate.
